How To Stay Safe When A Dog Approaches You

Michelle Bartsch from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London shows you what to do if a strange dog approaches you, and how to behave so you stay safe. Michelle Bartsch from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London shows you what to do if a strange dog approaches you, and how to behave so you stay safe.

Step 1: Stand Still

If a dog runs up to you, the best way to react is to stand still. Drop anything you are holding, as this may be what is attracting the dog to you. Don't run away as the dog may think this is a game, and start chasing you. Don't shout or wave your arms as this may either encourage or frighten him. If you act bored and don't make eye contact, most dogs will lose interest quickly.

Step 2: If the dog jumps up

When a dog runs up to you, he may jump up. The best reaction in this situation is to turn away. Don't shout or push him down, as he may think this is part of a game and jump up again. Ignore the dog until he gets bored and walks away.

Step 3: If the dog knocks you over

Larger dogs are capable of knocking people over. If this happens to you, curl up in a ball, keeping your head and arms tucked under your body. Stay in this position until he gets bored and leaves.

Once the dog has lost interest, keep watching him while you slowly move away backwards. If he returns, repeat steps 1 to 3.

this video helps to a certain extend. Some dogs are much fiercer.

why did you have to use a staffy for this video? they get enough bad press already. despite being able to see the dog was wagging it's tail and being friendly an inexperienced person may not see this. ANY dog can jump at people not just staffies.

very helpful, i will make sure my children see this :) Please please can you make one about how to keep your own dogs safe from attack? Our puppy was picked up by the head and shaken by a german shepherd recently and I'm worried about taking her out. She only escaped because we were near the car and she got underneath where it couldn't follow.

Great advice, my neighbour has four Labradors that he lets run loose and they run at me barking and growling. I already knew to stand still and ignore but did worry what to do if they tripped me up.
