Step 1: Purchase The Above Mentioned Equipment
To begin with, purchase a router or hub and 2 ethernet cables, you should be able to find these at any store that sells basic computer parts. Don't worry about buying the high end products unless you have other things in mind to use them for, the most basic of the basic will work if all you're looking to do is to transfer between your computers.
Step 2: Plug Everything Together
Next you want to plug everything together. Basically, plug your router into the wall, then using one ethernet cable plug it into your router and plug it into your laptop, then take the other ethernet cable and plug it into your PC. If you're unsure of where the cords should be plugged in, understand that if the plug fits in a hole, it's in the correct hole.
Step 3: Set up Your Laptop
On your laptop, click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. If there is not an option for this on your desktop then go to your start menu and click on "My Computer" through there. Next you want to right click on the icon for your C drive and click "sharing and security". Basically, tell it you're ok with everything until it is finished.
Step 4: Set Up Your PC
On your PC, you want to go to your start menu and click on "My Network Places". On the left hand side is a list of things you can do, click on "show workgroup computers". You should see your laptop drive at this point.
Step 5: Sharing Documents
Click on the laptop drive from your PC computer and find the documents that you want to save to your PC. Figure out where you want to save those documents on your PC, for instance if you want to save those documents to your "My documents" folder then you would go to the start menu and open up My Documents folder. Then select the documents from the laptop drive and drag them over to My Documents.
If you want to transfer files from your PC over to your laptop, follow the same instructions only you will share the C drive on your laptop and "show workgroup computers" on your laptop. While it may sound confusing, if you just follow these steps you will find that it is much easier than you ever imagined!
