Almost all countries want to see your passport when you
enter. And with tighter
security, you now need a passport just to come in from Canada
or Mexico. If you're traveling abroad in a few months from
now or just want to keep your traveling options open, here's how to
get your passport.
If you're leaving in less than 3 weeks, see our article "How
To Get A Passport Fast".
You'll need two 2"x2" identical passport photographs of yourself,
proof of U.S. Citizenship, a valid photo ID (like a driver's
license) and about $100.
Step 1: Create An Application
Fill out the personal information for your passport at https://pptform.state.gov/Default.aspx
Based on the information you provide, their "Passport Application
Wizard" will decide which form you need, and give you a pdf of the
passport application you need, already filled in with the
information you provided.
Step 2: Find A Facility
To find a passport acceptance facility to turn in your application,
go to http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/
Not only will you find facilities that accept passport
applications, but you may find facilities that will take your
passport photos for you.
Step 3: Apply In Person
Print out your application, ID, passport photographs and a $100
check or money order payable to U.S. Department of State, or use
your credit or debit card to a passport acceptance facility near
you.
Normal turn around time to get a passport is 4-6 weeks.
Happy travels!
