Knitting hats is not only easy, but lots of people like them and
they sell easy.
Steps
- Cast on 84 stitches.
- Knit the next row.
- Purl the next row.
- Continue to alternate between knitting a row and purling. This
is called the stockinette stitch and is used for lots of other
things.
- Stop when it's about 8 inches long. Make sure you stop after a
purled row so the next one is knitted.
- Knit 5 stitches, then knit the next two
together. Continue in this fashion for the whole row. The last two
stitched should be knitted together if you've done it correctly.
You should have 72 stitches when finished.
- Purl the next row.
- Knit 4 stitches, then knit the next two
together. Continue in this fashion. You should have
60 stitches when finished.
- Purl the next row.
- Knit 3 stitches, then knit the next two
together. You should have 48 stitches when
finished.
- Purl the next row.
- Knit 2 stitches, then knit the next two
together. You should have 36 stitches when
finished.
- Purl the next row.
- Knit 1 stitch, then knit the next two
together. You should have 24 stitches when
finished.
- Purl the next row.
- Knit every two stitches together. You should have
12 stitches when finished.
- Purl the next row.
- Knit every two stitches together so you end with
6 stitches.
- Measure about 3 feet of yarn and cut it off from the
skein.
- Take a large plastic sewing needle and thread it through the 6
stiches, making sure to leave a loop at the first end.
- Pull the needle through the loop and pull it tight.
- Stitch the sides of the hat together. If you want the knitted
side to show when you wear the hat, stitch so that the purled side
is showing. If you want the purled side to show when you wear it,
stitch the knitted side.
- Make a knot when you've finished stitching and then weave 3-4
inches of excess yarn into the hat brim and cut off the rest.
- Turn the hat inside out so the seam isn't as visible.
Tips
- When you're doing the stockinette stich, don't freak out if it
starts to curl at the end- it's supposed to. This will form the
brim of the hat when finished.
- Know in advance how to cast on, knit, purl, and knit stitches
together.
- If you have a smaller head, use size 6 or 7 needles. If you
have a larger head, use size 9 or 10 needles.
- Any yarn is acceptable, really. Choose a color and texture you
like.
- If you drop a stitch, use a crochet hook to pick it back
up.
Warnings
- When knitting stitches together, always count them at the end
of a row to make sure you have the correct number.
- Don't try to knit on an airplane. Airport security isn't very
fond of those slightly-pointy knitting needles.
- Some airlines let you bring needles. Southwest does. Check to
make sure before you try.
