Step 1: Preheat Your Oven
The oven needs to be heated to 450 degrees. By turning it on before beginning your recipe, it will be nice and hot when the scones are ready to be baked.
Step 2: Combine The Dry Ingredients
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Be sure to mix these ingredients well.
Step 3: Cut In The Butter
Cut in the butter using a fork or a pastry cutter. The mixture should look like crumbs when you are finished.
Step 4: Add The Egg
Add the egg to bowl and mix well.
Step 5: Add The Cheese
Add the grated cheese to the bowl. Mix the cheese in thoroughly.
Step 6: Add The Milk
Slowly pour the milk into the bowl. Then stir the milk. A thick dough will form.
Step 7: Prepare The Kneading Surface
Sprinkle the 1/2 cup of flour on the counter top or work surface.
Step 8: Knead The Dough
Dump the bowl of dough onto the counter top. Knead the dough gently for one minute.
Step 9: Roll The Dough
With your rolling pin, roll out the dough so it is 3/4" thick.
Step 10: Cut The Dough
Using your cookie cutter, cut rounds out of your dough. Be sure to cut as many as you can.
Step 11: Use The Scraps
If you have scraps of dough remaining, knead them again. Then proceed to roll them and cut out the remainder of the rounds.
Step 12: Prepare The Baking Sheet
Grease the baking sheet with non stick spray or shortening.
Step 13: Finish The Scones
Place the scones on the baking sheet about 1 inch apart. Brush with the reserved beaten egg.
Step 14: Bake The Scones
Place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake the scones for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
Serve the scones warm with butter if desired.
