A five point plan that tells you everything you need to know to
set up a website of your own.
Everyone's got a website these days. They're not all
Space-Aged wonders of wizardry like VideoJug - some of the best
websites out there are simple, funny quirky little sites. If you
want to start up your own - and let's face it, why wouldn't
you?-you'll need to know the steps involved.
This article will give you an overview of the process, and tell
you where to look for more in-depth advice on each of the different
steps.
1. Get a Domain Name
A domain name is the www. bit you type into the address bar.
You'll need to think long and hard about what to call your website
, and spend
money buying it. Once it's yours, you need
to buy hosting for your website's
files.
2. Buy Hosting
All your website's files need storing somewhere so members of
the public can access it. Companies out there on The Internet offer
up space on their servers for a fee. This
film tells you what to look for when buying hosting, and what
the process is.
3. Make your Website
This is the tricky bit, really. There are plenty of ways to do
it - you can hard-code it yourself, or use Web creation tools like
FrontPage, DreamWeaver or GoLive!
One of the simplest ways to get a nice-looking
fully-customisable website up and running is to download files from
Wordpress.org, and follow their instructions. This'll set you up
with a blog, and once it's hosted you can change the 'template'
easily from one of the many available online, and edit the code to
suit. We can help you learn how
code is laid out, and what certain bits mean.
4. Learn about FTP and
Uploading
Once you've bought hosting, you need to transfer your website's
files to the server, which is a relatively simple process.
It sounds scary but it's easy....
5.
Alternatively....
If all this is a bit much for you and you don't want to spend
any money, you could always get a blog instead.
They're easy! They're fun! They're also free! Watch
this to find out how. And to make sure it's not completely
rubbish -

Enjoy!
