What is a "cheekbone" or "malar" augmentation?

Steve Fallek (Plastic Surgeon & Medical Director, Face Focus Medical Spa, New York City) gives expert video advice on: What is a "cheekbone" or "malar" augmentation?; What are the procedure and costs of cheekbone augmentation surgery?; What is a "chin augmentation" or "mentoplasty"?

A cheekbone or malar augmentation usually refers to placement of a synthetic implant in the cheek area. It can be put in in a variety of different ways through different incision sites, either through the lower lid area, in through the mouth, or sometimes through an incision. The augmentation is a synthetic material that's placed onto the cheekbone, and usually placed on both the right and left cheeks. It's very common for patients that have lost cheek volume. Cheek implants have been diminished recently with the use of dermal fillers or other substances to restore some of the volume of the cheeks. Some of these would be Sculptra, Radiesse, Juvederm, or Restylane. This is a less invasive way to augment the cheek area.
