How should I use signals to communicate with my players during a game?
Signals in baseball are a huge part of the game. There's many things that go on, whether it's on offense or defense that you want to keep obviously from the other team finding out. So traditionally there are some very basic rules, for instance, on offense if you want your hitter to bunt you might do something like touch your belt because it begins with a B. If you want them to steal a base, you might touch your shirt which starts with S you know as you know steal. The hat. You touch your hat for a hit and run. So there's very traditional ways to relay the signals, but the bottom line is this. Signals are a very important part of the game whether you're on offense or defense and it just comes down to teaching the kids various things on your body that you want to touch. You know, it might be a command. You might say a certain word. You know my dad used to call me by my middle name when he wanted me to throw a change up. So there's very many ways to convey the signals. The bottom line is that make sure you take the time to explain the signals to your players. Test them, quiz them so they know them well and then you can apply them in a game.
