What are the origins of fantasy baseball?
The most popular story for how fantasy baseball started goes back to a guy named Daniel Okrent in the 80s. He and a bunch of his friends in the publishing industry met at this restaurant called the Rotisserie Franchise, and that's why it's called Rotisserie League baseball in a lot of places, not fantasy league baseball. Basically, they were huge baseball fans and wanted to come up with a new way to enjoy the game and be general managers, so they all selected their own teams and kept track of the stats throughout the season. That's pretty much how fantasy baseball got started.
