It is exactly the name that it says: it's a gel. You apply the gel over the nail bed, and then you go into a UV light which actually bakes the gel in place, and hardens it. Once it's removed from the UV light, they kind of lightly buff it and smooth it out. A lot of people like to wear gel nails because it's more of a shiny, clear, natural look.
