How do I get my foot in the door at a games company?
There are a number of ways you can get your foot in the door and just get known by a game design studio. You can apply for jobs just like you would with any industry, however, it's a bit tough to do with no experience. A good way of getting that game design experience is to apply for work experience positions - unpaid, for a month in a studio, work on a title with a studio, etc. There are entry level positions, like the quality assurance testers. Often, that's sort of a nice of a feeder into becoming a game designer: you come on as a tester, test the game, become known, you often have opportunity to provide feedback to the designers and you can prove that you're a good candidate for moving into a design role. An alternative is focus testing, too. Often, in the life of a game, when it's being developed, we'll get members of the public to come in, try our game and give us feedback. It has been known that those sorts of people get games jobs out of that as well. They become QA testers from that because they've enjoyed the experience and provided great feedback.
