How do you decide what expedition to do next?
I've got this long string of places that I still haven't finished going through since a boy, I know all these. But I love the words: Congo, Timbuktu, I haven't been to either of those yet. So, that would be good. Timbuktu, I wouldn't call that exploration but the Congo, there are certainly bits of the Congo that are very remote indeed. So, I think it's a sort of romantic longing based from childhood mythology really. I just imagine these exciting places, so I think there is that sort of naivety about my personality, probably, that helped me through the early years. A sort of innocence, a sort of boyish way, I hesitate to say boyish, but a childish way maybe, I just thought wow. I just had this enthusiasm and that got me through a lot of the, not dangers necessarily although a little bit of that, but it got me through the doubts and fears that people might have had. So I just think of these lovely places out there and there are lots of them, so simply something will pop up into my mind and then there will be the rainy season or the winter or something. You've got to coordinate the right time for the right place so I'm now looking for a window to get to the Congo. It might be early next year, but if I run out of time then it will have to be another section.
