I think it goes back again to how you initially put them down for their bedtime. If your strategy was correct and they didn't fall asleep while they were feeding, they will probably go back to sleep without difficulty. They'll get their food, they'll get their nutrition and be quite happy to go back to sleep because thats what they to do. It's not necessarily that they need to suck, but they need an association to help them to fall to sleep. So, theres a difference between nutrition that they need or the habit of sucking or having the nipple in the mouth as the association to actually fall asleep.
