How can a second baseman pickoff a runner in baseball?
Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'second baseman' in baseball?; What are the defensive responsibilities of a second baseman in baseball?; Where should a second baseman in baseball position himself on the diamond? and more...
The way a second baseman can pickoff a runner from baseball is if he has a predesigned plan with the pitcher on what's called a timing play. This includes a play where the pitcher may look back once, twice or three times and the second baseman will break to the bag, that's called a timing play. Then there's what's called an open glove play which is basically spontaneous, there's no predesigned play. If the second baseman is taking off too big of a lead or he's asleep, then what he'll do is he'll start to break to second base with his glove open telling the pitcher that, "Lets go. Lets go get this guy out."
