What are the proper techniques for a second baseman to handle a relay throw from the outfield in baseball?

Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'second baseman' in baseball?; What are the defensive responsibilities of a second baseman in baseball?; Where should a second baseman in baseball position himself on the diamond? and more...

The proper technique for a second baseman to handle a relay throw is to follow some basic instructions. The first step is to get into a position where the outfielder can hear and see him. He needs to be able to communicate well, and he also needs to be able to put his hands up. Secondly, he's got to be able to read the outfielder; does he have a strong arm or not, and if so he then has to make the decision of whether he needs to go closer to him if he doesn't have a strong arm, he needs to back up away from him if he does have a strong arm. Lastly he needs to be in athletic position in relation to where he catches the ball. If he's able to transfer the ball quickly, and make the throw. So his body, in other words, is in a position where he's not just facing one way rigidly, he's at an angle, so he can catch the ball, transfer the ball, and then release the ball to the next base, because many times a player will be out, or safe, by fractions of a second. So you're looking to save that fraction of a second.
