What is the proper way for a second baseman to execute a rundown in baseball?

Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'second baseman' in baseball?; What are the defensive responsibilities of a second baseman in baseball?; Where should a second baseman in baseball position himself on the diamond? and more...

The proper way for a second baseman to execute a rundown in baseball is, number one, he has to learn how to clear the base path, meaning wherever the runner is running along he has to get at an angle and hopefully his partner, his other infielder, is also creating the same angle with him so the ball doesn't get thrown into the runner. Once the ball hits the runner, chances are the runner's going to be safe. Secondly, he needs to create enough space to where, as the runner's coming to him, he can call for the ball by saying ‘now'. If he calls for the ball by saying ‘now' he should have plenty of time to catch the ball, and tag the runner. Thirdly, if he's the one that has the ball, then his job is to run the base runner as hard as he can and get him moving as fast as he can so that when he throws the ball to the other position player, the other position player can also catch the ball with plenty of time, to not only catch it in a relatively relaxed manner but then tag the runner.
