When you are going to a prom, obviously you want to keep the glam factor up. You don't want to go in a sweat suit for sure, and you don't want to go in jeans, because that's yicky. In terms of dresses, the sky is the limit. A lot of people like to go long, but knee length is definitely a new and fresh way to go. You want to think about color because there's more to the palette than black and white. In fact I wouldn't even do white. I think that's boring. Save white for when you get married. Go with a fun color. Open up the magazines, see what's the fresh color out there, and go with it.
