How do I find a good vet for my cat?
Just like it's great when we have a wonderful family doctor for us and our family, it's equally important to find a good veterinarian for your cat. And it's easier to do than you even realize. Talk to some of your friends who have cats that really take the time to take care of their cats, and ask them their pros and cons of their veterinarian. You can also contact the American Association of Feline Practitioners and they have a list of veterinarians that are practicing in your area. But the big litmus test is to make an appointment and go visit a few veterinarians and tell them, "Hey. I'm shopping for a veterinarian for my cat." When you walk in, check out the lobby. Is it noisy? Is there a place where cats can maybe be treated that are separate from dogs? Does the staff seem harried or do they have their act together? Does the vet actually call cats by their names? Does he pay attention or is it "the cat"? I know it sounds silly, but it means a lot. Do they follow up? I mean do you have time? Do you wait a long time in the lobby? Do they have literature in the lobby that really talks about how to be a better cat owner? These are some of the signs that tell me that they really are investing in your cat. You're going to have your cat for a long time. It's really great when you have a veterinarian who's on your side.
