What is a 'hit-and-run' play in baseball?

Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'base runner' in baseball?; What do I do after I hit a fair ball?; After I hit a fair ball how should I judge how many bases I can take? and more...

A hit-and-run play in baseball is a very strategic play when you have a runner on base - or two runners, actually. And the idea is that you're putting the runners in motion. Again, it's an element of surprise. You're trying to get the defence off guard, and maybe make them move around to cover the bases because the runners are moving, and it usually creates more holes in the field. So in hit-and-run, the job of the hitter is to simply put the ball in play, not take an over-aggressive swing, and hopefully find one of the holes created by the runners putting the defence in motion.
