What is my role as a base runner during a 'hit-and-run' play in baseball?

Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'base runner' in baseball?; What do I do after I hit a fair ball?; After I hit a fair ball how should I judge how many bases I can take? and more...

Your role as a base runner in the hit-and-run play is to make sure the pitcher goes home first. You're not taking a big lead to where you might get picked off, you're not worried about getting a quick advantage by running earlier as you would when you're stealing a base. Your job is to simply make sure the pitcher breaks his hand to go toward home plate, then you can just run knowing you're being protected by the hitter.
