What is the 'base path' on a baseball field?
Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'base runner' in baseball?; What do I do after I hit a fair ball?; After I hit a fair ball how should I judge how many bases I can take? and more...
The base path on the baseball field was designed so that the runner has to stay in a certain boundary. So there's a base path that's actually done with chalk between home and first, and between third and home. The base path is really more of an imaginary line between first and second, and second and third, and it's really at the umpire's discretion whether you stay in the base path. The idea is, I'm guesstimating, that it's approximately 3 feet wide or 4 feet wide.
