A headfirst slide in baseball is also used to create a better opportunity to be safe and not worry about getting up and getting to the next base. Instead of going with your feet of course, you go in with your hands, and by going in with your hands first and on your stomach as opposed to your feet first and on your behind, again the idea is that you can manoeuvre your hands and create different angles to possibly not get tagged out as easily.
