A hook slide in baseball is when, instead of going in straight-legged where the advantage is that you can pop up and go to the next base, your goal is really to be safe at the bag. Perhaps the ball beats you and you need to create a different angle so that, instead of your feet going in there, which are easy to tag, you can create a different angle and maybe use your hand to be safe.
