Alan Jaeger (Pitching Coach / Founder) gives expert video advice on: What does it mean to 'take a lead' off of a base?; What does it mean to 'steal' a base in baseball?; How far should I 'lead off' of a base in a baseball game? and more...
There are many factors to consider when looking to 'stealing home' in baseball. The first factor is your running speed, as you have to be a very fast runner to be able to do it. Secondly, it is the element of surprise; the pitcher's not aware of you trying to steal home and he's not paying attention to you. Thirdly, he really needs to be in a windup. If he's in a stretch, meaning he's making a much more shorter approach to home, you can't, you can't get close enough. And then lastly, the ball gets behind home plate by a pass ball or a wild pitch then, then you just can take home base, so you might as well just go ahead.
