In Texas Hold 'Em, there's an automatic "open" to the game. To the left of the dealer, you have what's called the "small blind" - half the minimum bet placed by a player. To his left is what's called the "big blind" - the full minimum bet. The "big blind" is automatic, and opens every game; following that, each player much decide whether to bet or fold.
