Are trains a viable option for family travel?

Trains are a terrific mode of travel. Among other things, they give kids a little bit more freedom than you have on any other mode of transportation, because they can walk around. However, one thing I have learnt is that buying a ticket does not necessarily guarantee you a seat - it guarantees you passage, but you want to get there early so you can make sure that you can get a seat on that train. If possible, if they have seat reservations, make sure that you make them in advance.
