To travel to certain countries such as Russia and Brazil you need additional documentation in addition to your passport such as a visa. What a visa does is allows special entry into those countries. To obtain a visa you usually need to go to their embassy or consulate in the US. If there is not one located nearby you can obtain it through the mail. What you will have to do is provide additional identification and documentation that will allow you to travel to their country.
