What are the legal ways to dispose of a human body?

Dan Redmond (Cemetery and Funeral Inspector, California Department of Consumer Affairs ) gives expert video advice on: How do I handle the disposition of a human body?; What will happen to the deceased's body in the first few hours?; How can I preserve a body for a family viewing at home? and more...

The legal ways to dispose of a human body are burial in a cemetery and cremation. Disposing of a human body through cremation could include interring the remains in a cemetery, scattering them at sea or scattering them in a favorite place that you might have, as long as you get legal permission from the health department and the jurisdiction where you're wanting to do the scattering. You can legally dispose of a human body yourself if it's cremated. Most cemeteries won't allow you to assist in the process of actually doing the interment. Some places will allow you to actually do the interment on your property, but you need to check with the local health department or registration to make sure that that is something legal where you are.
