Welcome to A Guide To Acupuncture. Today, we are going to give you a brief demonstration of acupuncture and show you what it's like. So, acupuncture is performed with needles.

The needles are very fine. The needle for acupuncture is finer than human hair and can pass down the shaft of most hypodermic needle. So, it's a very different sensation to any kind of injections that you had before.

So each individual needle is sealed in its own blister wrap and it is sterile. They are all disposable, one use. So, there is no concern for safety issues.

Each practitioner will work with some basic hygiene facilities when they work. So I use an alcohol gel which we work with beforehand and I have already taken a diagnosis of Terry here and we are just going to work with inserting some needles to give her and you the idea of what's going on. Terry has never had acupuncture before.

So it's new for her as well. So we are just going to take the first needle and we are going to find the first point, right there, and this is Terry's first needle. So I am going to ask Terry to take a breath in and that's the insertion.

So no flinching, no relaxation, no tenderness and I am just going to get the needle to the correct depth and we are going to stimulate the needle to affect the chi of the body. Now, she should feel a sensation and judging by the look on her face, I can see that she has achieved that. Excellent! So, we will move to the next point.

So we are going to balance her up with the other side. These points are very good stabilizing points. Breathe in and out.

These points are very good for helping the digestive system, very good for toning the body, and building up the reserves of the body. So, the next needle we are going to insert is in the foot. So we are going to work with just one side.

We are going to work with the right side. And this point is called Liver Three. So we will put the needle in.

Let us stimulate the needle very gently until she receives a sensation. The fourth point that we are going to do is in the left hand. So it is going to be Large Intestine Four, that is between the index finger and the thumb.

We go for the fleshy points, just where the crease of the index finger and the thumb ends. This could be quite a reactive point; it is a very strong point. Having said that, still breathe in calmly and relax.

The last point that we are going to put in is called the Yintang and it's an extra point which is just between the eyebrows. We are just going to pinch the skin a little and breathe in and out. There we go.

These points are all interacting with each other. So, we have a point in the legs, the point in the foot and the hand and the points in the head, all creating a sense of peace and tranquility. So, the point in the head and the foot is to release any kind of neck and shoulder tension and also day to day stress.

The points in the legs are to support the body and the last point is to create a certain amount of tranquility and relaxation in the mind. And that is a basic guide to acupuncture. Typically, these needles would be in for anywhere from twenty to forty minutes.

In this case, we will leave the needles for twenty minutes. And that is a basic guide to acupuncture. .
