In today's society, many people suffer from middle back pain that is often very treatable. In this VideoJug presentation, learn some easy techniques for helping to alleviate discomfort and live a more pain-free life.
My name is Dirk Laubscher, I've been a physiotherapist for over the last 10 years, working in Harley Street for the last 6. Today, I'm going to talk to you guys about the causes and the management of back pain. A guide to middle back pain and causes.
As you know, the middle back is the part between your neck and your lower back, and that particular area is a very stiff area because you get your ribs that attaches to the sides of the vertebrae in that area. So, it's already a very stiff area, and unfortunately in today's life, most people sit a lot, and they don't exercise a lot, they don't move a lot. You know, it's always sitting in a public transport or in a car, getting through their work sitting.
I'm just generalizing now but it's mainly those people who've got desk jobs that suffers with this pain. And again, the cause of that is very simple, it's usually because people are slouching and they're working. They've got very bad posture sitting, when they're walking as well, and what happens is, because of the really stiff area, by slouching and getting the bad posture for a long period of time, you're putting a lot of strain on those joints and the joints start hurting.
Okay, so another cause of pain in the middle part of your back is your lack of exercise, particularly a lack of movement of that area. If you look at your spine from the side, if that's sort of the natural curve, or the curve you have, an extension would be bending it back like that. And that's because there's a lack of that for most people when they're sitting, you know, at their desks, that puts a lot of pressure on those joints which can refer pain across those muscles, giving you that pain across your back.
Also, a lack of core stability. Like I said before, you know, we as humans need a very strong core. And once we lose the strength in those muscles, you know, your spine would sort of want to collapse.
And also, we're not talking about postural muscles; these are muscles that run down the back of your spine and their function is to keep you upright. So, again, when you're slouching and bending forward most of the day, they get weak, because they don't get exercise. Always remember that gravity's always working on you.
Always. So, when you're sitting, you've got that force of gravity pulling you forward, so it's very important that you really resist that by straightening up, shoulders back, and mobilizing that part of your spine. So, just a recap, in general, the causes of pain in the middle part of your back is because of stiffness, because of lack of exercise, bad posture, any bad sleeping posture, definitely bad sitting posture, and walking. .
