An animal care expert explains why rabbits should be neutered, at what age it should be done, and how to care for them while they're recuperating from the surgery.
Hi. My name's Marie, and I'm the Deputy Manager of the small animal department at Wood Green Animal Shelters, and I'm going to give you a guide to neutering rabbits. Rabbits can breed from the age of eight weeks to twelve weeks, so it's really important that rabbits are neutered to prevent unwanted litters.
Another reason why you should neuter is for health reasons. Female rabbits are quite prone to uterine cancer at the age of three to four years of age and neutering will help this. Another fantastic benefit is actually temperament.
Female in particular, and males, as they reach the age of five to six months, they can become quite aggressive towards their owners and towards their rabbit companions. Neutering really helps to control their temperaments, helps them calm down, and also helps for you to be able to bond another rabbit quite easily with them. Once they're neutered, when they come back from the vet's, it's important to make sure they're comfortable and relaxed.
It can take about a week or so for them to recover. In the hutch and the run setup, it's a good idea to put down a couple of towels, and even maybe a quilt, in and around the hutch, in the run areas so they can lay down and keep their spay wound warm and dry. A female rabbit can be neutered from the age of five to six months, and a male can be castrated from the age of three to four months of age.
Another reason, behavior that they can do when they're entire is actually spraying, and this really does settle down once neutering. So neutering has fantastic benefits. When you go to a rescue shelter, nearly all rabbits are already neutered for you.
So maybe if you've got a rabbit, single one, at home, you could go to your local shelter to find it a companion whose already been neutered, and they'll be able to guide you into getting your own rabbit neutered as well. .
