An expert in sun care products and techniques explains how and why to protect the skin on your scalp from being damaged by sun exposure.
Hi, there. I'm Abi Cleeve from Ultrasun. I've been in the sun care industry for thirteen years, really helping people to make the right decisions on their sun care choices.
Today, I'm going to try and do the same for you. It's very important to protect the scalp. A lot of us don't think about this area, for it's covered in hair and well-protected anyway, but obviously, as we get older the hair starts to thin.
And whether you're male or female, a lot of people suffer from hair loss as they get into later life. This skin has never been exposed before. It's like baby-soft, new, vulnerable skin, and so important to protect.
Also, it's very close to the skull, and wherever we have skin very close to the bone, it's more vulnerable. You see this with chins, the tops of feet. Where there is less fat under the skin, there is less absorbency of the sun's rays.
So, your scalp is double vulnerable. It's brand new skin, never previously exposed, and it has very little fatty deposits to protect you underneath. Now, when protecting the scalp, a lot of us are concerned with, we don't want greasy product in our hair; we don't want it to look very obvious.
And even sometimes, people with very white partings can really suffer skin damage there. We do see a lot of melanoma developing in the scalp and around the ear area, so it's very important that people protect from both UVA and UVB in this area. Choose a product that's not greasy, but maybe has a liposome base, so it feels very soft to the touch and disappears easily into the skin.
This won't make the hair look greasy. I always recommend that men use Ultrasun Sports 20. It's a clear liquid gel.
It doesn't leave a white residue, disappears beautifully, and really protects the scalp and vulnerable areas. When protecting the scalp, always remember that this is new skin, very vulnerable, and always exposed to the sun for longer periods that the rest of our body might be. You really need to protect the scalp very well.
When protecting the scalp, remember this is a super vulnerable area. It's often new skin that hasn't been exposed to the sun before, with very little fat under the skin to protect us. Make sure you use a really long lasting protection with both UVB and UVA protection.
Remember, medical experts are seeing more and more cases of melanoma develop in the scalp area. It's essential that we protect this area. High level SPF, great UVA, and really look after your skin. .
