Adding Integers With The Same Sign

How to add integers with same sign.
-
Step 1:
-
Adding Integers
-
This lesson is on the addition of integers. It's only going to involve integers with the same signs. So an example that you are probably familiar with is probably 4+2. If you remember 4+2 is equal to 6. We started at four and we went two places to the right to get six.
-
Step 2:
-
Negative Integers
-
But now, using some negative integers, we will have the example -3 +-1. What that tells us to do is start at negative 3 and go one unit to the left because it's negative 1. 1 place to the left gives us an answer of negative 4. Another example would be -2+-3. This tells us to start at -2 and then go 3 places to the left: 1,2,3. We see our answer is then going to be -5. If we look at these 3 problems, we will notice a pattern.
-
Step 3:
-
Integer Patterns
-
The pattern is when the signs are the same, we're going to add each number and carry the same sign. Examples without the number line are -7+-3. 7+3 is 10. Because they are both negative my answer will be negative. 5+1 is 6. Because they are both positive, my answer will be positive.
