Alternatives To The Traditional Wedding Dress

The full white wedding dress is traditional, but not right for everyone. Here's our guide to alternatives, so you can get the right look for your big day. VideoJug gives helpful advice on bridal dresses, accessories, and wedding couture to give you the perfect start to your marriage.

Step 1: Try a two piece

A practical and flattering alternative to the traditional wedding dress is a bodice and skirts. Corset wedding two-pieces are extremely flattering and versatile. You can mix and match tops with bottoms to find exactly the shape, material and detailing you are looking for.

Two pieces are also great if you are different sizes on top and below.

Step 2: Suits

Many brides getting married for the second time opt for a streamlined white or cream classic suit with a detailed bodice or blouse underneath. Choose a couture suit or a high street suit, whichever fits your budget but also whichever fits with your style.

Step 3: Evening wear

Many designers renowned for their evening wear are now offering ornate but relaxed gowns for less ostentatious ceremonies.

You could also go to your local high street where more and more shops are offering formal dresses at affordable prices. Why not buy something you can wear again to occasions in the future?

Step 4: Let's get colourful

There is no reason why you have to wear white on your wedding day. Choose a colour that reflects your personality and the style of the day.

You could also persuade your husband to be to wear a cream suit while you hog the limelight in a bright colour.

If you're getting married in the winter think about deep colours like reds or purples. In the summer creams, pinks yellows or pale blue will all work well.

Step 5: Go Vintage

Vintage dresses are also very popular- guaranteed to be unique and often under your budget. Search second hand and charity shops, or try internet auction sites for something really different.

Step 6: Beach Wedding

If you're getting married somewhere exotic you're unlikely to want to pack - or wear - a heavy layered white dress - how about a bikini with your new married name on it? Or a sarong? If that's too radical a summer dress would look fabulous for a beach ceremony.

Think about footwear too - your feet will swell in the heat so try pretty flip flops or bare feet instead of fancy heels.

Whatever outfit you choose for your wedding day, make sure it's comfortable and reflects your personality.
