Attacking Headers
Welcome to the Videojug Soccer School, brought to you in association with the Brazilian Soccer Schools. In this film we show you some drills to improve your attacking headers.
Attacking headers are a great way to score a goal. The basics of an attacking header are to head the ball downwards and on target. Using your neck muscles as you head the ball will add some extra power to help beat the keeper.
Step 1: Drill 1
Throw the ball up to yourself and head down so it bounces to a partner. Try and increase the power of your header getting it to bounce as high as possible to your partner. After a few goes try throwing the ball a bit further in front and run and jump to meet it.
Step 2: Drill 2
This time get your partner to throw the ball up to you. Run and jump to meet the ball and head back to your partner making sure the ball bounces first. Take it in turns throwing and heading. To get more accuracy aim your header through the legs of your partner, first to score five goals through the legs wins.
Step 3: Drill 3
Many headed chances come from balls that are crossed so try practicing attacking headers from balls from the side. Get a ball thrown in from the side and try to hit a small target on the ground. It's important to time your leap right and to head the ball down.
