Basic Strokes For Early Learners (3-5 Years)

Basic Swimming Strokes For Early Learners (3-5 Years). Our expert swim teacher will take you through a series of techniques that will have your child confidently swimming in the water in no time. Great for children aged between 3-5 years to learn the basics strokes of swimming.

Step 1: Practise 1

If you have a hoop try getting your child to move through it by kicking their legs and moving their arms if they can. Often, when young children first learn how to swim they are not very good at swimming in a straight line. Using a hoop encourages them to swim in a comfortable but confined area. If you don't have a hoop direct them to move in a straight a line as possible.

Step 2: Practise 2

At this stage, making learning fun is essential. Why not bring some toys into the practice? Start by dropping some sinkable toys into the water and getting your child to retrieve them. This helps them to get used to being totally submerged and opening their eyes under the water.

Step 3: Practise 3

By now, your child should be totally comfortable in the water. Introduce a float into the practice and get them to do some widths in the pool. Encourage them to do a strong kicking action but with as little splashing as possible. This kicking action is very similar to what they'll learn for the front crawl stroke. If they can put their head in the water too, and come up for breath, this is also good start.

Practising these exercises regularly will put your child on to the right tracks for learning actual strokes. So keep them at it.
