Step 1:
-
Why pets need water.
-
We know that life cannot exist without water, and the same holds true for our pets. Water regulates our dogs and cats body temperature, aids in digestion, and detoxifies their system.
-
Step 2:
-
What water should I be using?
-
We have to have a certain amount of water to flush the kidneys, to purify the blood, to get rid of toxins out of the system.
Water from the tap can contain chlorine, copper, and lead, which can adversely affect the pet's health.
Most taps have some residue or product in it. Now the pets, if they have a choice they would rather not drink it.
Filtered or bottled water is always a better choice. Look for words like activated carbon, distilled, or reverse osmosis when choosing filters or bottled water. Avoid spring water. Its mineral content is a little too high for pets.
-
Step 3:
-
My pet doesn't drink enough...
-
Let's say you have a dog that doesn't like to drink very much. There's a very simple solution for this. Take some chicken broth, and salt it of course, add a few teaspoons to your pets water. If you continue doing this watch how quickly your dog's water consumption increases. Now your dog's water becomes a treat.
-
Step 4:
-
Choosing a bowl.
-
It may also seem trivial, but picking the right bowl for your pet is equally important. Plastic food bowls will get scratched and harbor bacteria in the grooves. Stainless steel bowls are heavy, don't move around, and easily cleaned. Glass and ceramic bowls are fine, but can break.
When it comes to felines, stoneware is the cats' meow. Studies show that cats drink more from pottery than from metal or plastic bowls.
To insure a longer, healthier life for your pet, start with the foundations, the water they drink.
