Can I Turn Off The Internet?
The Internet is a massive part of all our lives these days, but can it be switched off? Does anyone hold the key to The Big Net On/ Off Switch? Find out here...
Is it possible to switch off The Internet? No, not really. There's no “Internet Headquarters” where all the information comes from, and there's certainly no big on/ off switch on the wall that controls everything. The Internet can't be taken down for maintenance or, as some old email spammy hoaxes go, for ‘spring cleaning'.
The Net is more a collection of computer networks all connected up so they can talk to each other, which we collectively label as ‘The Internet'. It all started in 1969 with just 4 host computers. Back in those days, the plan was to type the word ‘login' in one computer, and have it show up on another. They got as far as the G before everything crashed. Technically, then, The Internet was down for repairs.
Today, there's over 281 billion gigabytes of data out there. Most of that is unsavoury, probably.
Noone owns The Internet as a whole, and even if large chunks of networks were blown to smithereens, the rest would still be perfectly accessible. It's monitored, and Governments can block access to certain bits of it. Most countries block very few sites, but some don't have access to The Internet at all. So while for them it is essentially turned off, for the rest of us it's still buzzing away in the background whipping packets of data back and forth.
You can turn off your own Internet connection of course, simply by flipping the power switch on the wall. Then you need never be bombarded by pictures of nudie ladies or angry teenagers ever again.
