Choosing Paint And Colours
This is a film showing you how to choose paint and colours when creating a watercolour painting. Choosing paint and colours is so important when painting, so this video shows you how best to manipulate colour when creating your artwork.
-
Start with the basic colour theory a color circle in the centre, first there are the 3 primary colours red, blue and yellow.
-
From the primary colours can be mixed the secondary colours green, purple and orange.
-
In the circle yellow touches every other colour except one purple. There are 3 complementary colours red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple.
-
Use this as a starting point to explore all the ways to manipulate and exploit colour and its various characteristics.
-
Mixing complementary colours together will arrive at chromatic neutrals, colourful greys that are very useful when mixing different shades from various colours.
-
One way to test colour capacity, paint black Indian ink onto paper and paint the colours across the top and this will show if the colours are opaque or transparent.
-
Keep a record of the colours this is an index of how the colours have been mixed.
-
Begin by having 2 sets of primary colours and earth colours so as to mix more colours as needed.
-
As an exercise work with colour opposites e.g. red on green background using the same limited colours to create tones and shades.
