DJ Tutorial, Video 1, The Loop Function

A short video with DJ Tutor showing you how to use the loop function when Dj'ing, It shows you what the loop function on the CDJ-800mk2 turntable is all about.

Step 1:
-
Loop Function Explained
-
All right folks, It's Jonathan here. This is video number one in a selection I'm doing onthe loop function of the CDJ turntable. Now, before we even touch the actual turntable, what is a loop? What does it mean? What does it do?
-
Step 2:
-
Beat/ Timing
-
Right, basically if you have a listen to any kind of dance music you will of course have a beat. If you listen to that beat and count you'll have timing.
So for example house music you've got bang, bang, bang, bang ,bang, bang, bang, bang. If you count, you can actually count like so One,two, three, four five, six seven, eight.
In say hip-hop, du shh, da du du shh, du du shh, da du du shhh. One,two, three, four five, six seven, eight. In funk, ba ba bum ba bum ba ba bum ba ba bum ba. Ya' do One,two, three, four five, six seven, eight.
-
Step 3:
-
Form A Loop
-
Now lets say we take that count of eight and we clasp this as a count of eight. Now, piece of paper right? What I'm going to do is, I'm going to form a loop.
I'm going to attach the end to the beginning. So now what we've got is we've got One,two, three, four five, six seven, eight, One,two, three, four five, six seven, eight. And its just an ongoing saga, it continually goes from one to eight , one to eight ,one to eight like so.
-
Step 4:
-
Halve The Looping
-
Now lets say we want halve that , so we've got to count to four. So basicallly what we do is we do One,two, three, four . But what we do is we loop it. So now we've got One,two, three, four ,One,two, three, four , like so.
Now lets say for example we halve that so we got to count of two. So again its half of four. We get our piece of paper and now we've got two, One,two,One,two. Yes, you guessed it - a count of one.
But we're going to loop that like so. So basically what is happening here is you've just got one beat , but its going ... sorry, it s starting like this, its just doing one, one, one one. That's all its doing like so.
Now if we actually put those next to each other. Now, bearing in mind this is not to scale. If I can just put that in there, that in there, and that in there like that. Now, in essence what we've got....I'm trying to pick these guys up here now. In essence what we've got there is we've got something lets say from a scale of one to eight. We've got this which is eight , we've got this guy here which is four, we've got the next one which is two, and the next one which is one.
-
Step 5:
-
Sample Music
-
Now then, what happens with the CDJ turntable, is it will sample some music. It will sample a segment of music. It will sample eight beats, and it will have the eight beats running from one to eight. But then it will just go straight back to number one , and then continue again. Straight back to number one, continue again. Likewise with four. From one to four, straight back to one, start again . Straight back to one, start again. With two, one two, soon as it gets to two, back to one. One two back to one.One two. And one, it'll just go one, one, one, one.
-
Step 6:
-
Finish
-
Like I said, I'm not even going to touch it yet. This is the first lesson in, basically, the loop function of a CDJ turntable. This is what its all about. Hope its been a help. Practice and enjoy!
