Fashion Tips For Your Body Shape: Plus Size Clothes

Learn how to dress to flatter your shape with our fashion guide for larger sizes. Learn how to dress to flatter your shape with our fashion guide for larger sizes.

Step 1: Styles

Wear suits with single breasted jackets, and wide leg or flared trousers to balance out the width around your centre. Skirts should be long and simple without bulky pockets or pleats.

Wear ‘empire line' dresses to cinch in your slimmest point just under the bust. Tops with round or V necks will show off your cleavage, and sleeves will flatter your upper arms.

Step 2: Colour

Dark colours are flattering so try olive, burgundy and brown as well as black..

Wearing the same colour on the top and bottom will accentuate your height and take the focus off problem areas such as the stomach, hips and thighs.

Step 3: Patterns

As a general rule, the less pattern there is on an outfit, the more slimming it will be, so don't wear big, bright patterns, or shiny fabrics.

Always avoid horizontal lines but subtle vertical lines can be slimming - so try wearing an open jacket in a lighter or darker shade to your top and trousers.

Step 4: Shoes and Accessories

Well coordinated heels will give you greater length and help reduce your width. Emphasise your best bits with accessories such as bold necklaces, bangles, and earrings, but avoid belts which will draw attention to your middle.

Right, then, there's only one problem: "plus size" is a size range, NOT a body shape, and basing fashion tips on one particular shape isn't going to do anyone any good. Plus size women have the same body shapes and variations as smaller women--just bigger.
