Fashion Trends: How To Wear Ruffles
Celebrity Stylist Zoe Lem teaches you how to wear ruffles, one of the latest trends for spring/summer.
-
Step 1:
-
Who Can Wear Ruffles?
-
Ruffles add width so if you want to disguise, slim down or make look smaller in any way do not put a ruffle there.
-
They can be a great way to balance out so if you've got bigger hips put ruffles on the shoulders or if you've got bigger shoulders put them on the hips. This creates balance and is a great vintage-style look.
-
Step 2:
-
Ruffles on the top half
-
If you have a bigger bust you need to avoid or be careful wearing any ruffles in that area.
-
They can be great if you have a smaller bust and it can be a really pretty look and a great way to add volume and shape in this area.
-
If you have a bigger bust go for a line cutting through the bust, lengthening the body and chopping the bust in half. This is much better than adding the volume on top.
-
Step 3:
-
Ruffles on the bottom half
-
If you have slim legs and you're not too big in the hip and bottom area this can be great for a funky evening look with heels and great jewellery as long as you keep the top half simple.
-
If you have big hips or thighs and you're more pear-shaped you need to avoid wearing a shorter skirt with lots of ruffles as this will make you look wider as its drawing lines horizontally across the body drawing attention to this area. You need to wear a longer skirt with ruffles that are more graduating and lengthening.
-
Step 4:
-
A little bit of ruffles
-
A little bit of ruffles can go a long way. If you don't want to go over the top or add ruffles to your largest parts then the shoulders is a great place to add them. It acts like a puffed sleeve and balances out the hips, thighs and bust. This is a very pretty way to add width on the shoulders and balance out an A-line skirt.
-
Step 5:
-
Ruffles on accessories
-
This is a great way to add a little flavour of the trend by having them on the bag, shoes, scarves or jewellery.
-
If you go for shoes you need to look for tiering of the fabric - its all about layering so a real vintage-style.
-
For scarves you can use a simple shape as a base so you could have an A-line which might be great for your body and a scarf will then add volume round your neck. As long as it's a great colour this can be a way of adding a ruffle to your neck without creating too much volume on your top half. It can be lengthening, cutting through the body but still adding volume and creating the trend so you're still really fashionable. Ruffles, but not too ruffles!
