Getting Started In Math
The Video Math Tutor shows you how to get started with your studies in mathematics. He lists everything you will need in his VideoJug video.
- You Will Need
-
Step 1:
-
Get Your Writing Tool
-
With getting started, it’s pretty easy. You just need a few things. First off of course, a pencil, or a pen. It doesn’t matter. You just need something to write with, so you can take notes while you’re watching this wonderful videos of me.
-
Step 2:
-
Match The Board On Paper
-
Next thing you’re going to need is a red pen. Now it doesn’t have to be a single pen. You can have a multi-color pen, and it doesn’t have to be red, it can be green or blue or whatever, just something different.
This is because I normally write with a black pen when I write notes on the board, but for emphasis and for highlighting, I tend to use a red pen.
So when I’m on the board, you should do the same thing on paper. It’s easy.
-
Step 3:
-
Obtain A Ruler
-
Next thing for making the graphs and tables it’s good just to have a little six-inch ruler. Nothing fancy. Just to make better graphs with. If you don’t want to do this when you're doing the notes with me, together, that’s fine. But it’s good to have for class.
-
Step 4:
-
Buy A Compass
-
And finally if you are taking a geometry class or a class where you get to draw circles or arcs just have a compass. Nothing fancy. Just something to get the job done.
-
Step 5:
-
Prepare With The Notes
-
Next thing you’re going to be needing is of course my notes. And what you need to do is read through this notes first. That is very important. Take a little time to do the lesson quizzes at the end of each section. Anything that has a little cd icon, will be done on my videos. So there's a little reassurance there. And the videos will also have additional examples. So it’s not just exactly what you see in the notes. The notes compliment the videos, the videos compliment the notes. Simple as that.
-
Step 6:
-
Create Your Own Math Ring Binder
-
When you use the notes, make sure you also have plenty of papers. Just get a binder, a separate binder for your math. The key to doing well is organization . I’ll talk about that in another video that’s on this website. So get your notes, put them in the binder.
If you need to do graphs I have extra graphing paper on my website you can actually print those up. And as an extra bonus you can print out one of these things. It’s a little cutesy up cover page, so it’s math notes and another math tutor here. And if you feel a little embarrassed having to have it say math notes, well you can also have “My Evil Plan for World Domination.” You can have that on your binder and that way no one will know they’re really math notes.
-
Step 7:
-
Choose Your Calculator
-
Finally to get started you will need a calculator as that is incredibly important. And yes, you can probably get by with something simple as Ti-30 for fifteen bucks. But again you get what you paid for.
I will not be using this particular calculator for these videos although you can get by with lots of problem with this. I will be using the Ti-54+ silver edition calculator.
Now if you have graphing calculator, yes, this is the one you should get. It’s a good investment, it’ll last for years, you will use it for a lot of math classes, it’s incredibly fast, it’s got tons of memory, techniques that it provides, plenty of support on their website - address is right there below - where you can actually download programs, other applications.
Again, they’re dozens of calculator on the internet, that way you can find information on your net. This is the one I will use because I have to use something , and this happens to be the best there is.
Now if you already have a graphing calculator let’s say a Ti-83, 83+, or 84, though that’s not the silver edition you can still get by with that calculator. You don’t have to get one of these.
-
Step 8:
-
Be Positive
-
Well, that’s pretty much it, very simple, just get the notes, sit back and enjoy the video, making sure you have writing material, and the calculator.
Finally, I want you just to have a positive attitude. That’s it! I will get you through this. Hey, that is my job. This is why you are paying me lots of money with my cds (I hope) to get you through your math class. As simple as that.
Also, if you do have any questions and you want to get a hold of me, right there is my email address, right there. So take a moment to let me know what you think of these videos, alright? If you have any suggestions for improvement send them in.
