Gran Turismo 5 is a PlayStation 3 game and is the latest in a long line of driving simulations. If you're planning on spending any amount of time with this game, you should invest in a force feedback steering wheel. Not only is it nice to have the feedback in your hands, it gives you much greater precision.
When it comes to turns, and you really need that in Gran Turismo, when it comes to filling up, the best tip I've heard from the pros is "don't spend big money early". You don't need to spend more than a hundred thousand pounds on a car early on, so save it all for later when you're going to be spending millions. That being said, second-hand, a used skyline is probably your best investment, as that will give you a really good advantage.
If you're new to driving sims, then don't buy the FF cars. They have a tendency to under-steer, so you'll have to turn into corners a lot earlier than you expect. And finally, on the top gear track, the hammerhead corner, I'm not sure if this is a bug or part of the design.
But if you go through the striped cones, just before you hit the hammerhead, you can actually cut off the worst of the corner. Come through the gap before the next set of solid cones, you'll pass at least three cars on the way. So, in a nutshell, spend your real money on a car steering wheel with force feedback, keep your virtual money, save that for the latest races, play through the licenses to rack up easy XP, play through the special events to rack up money and the hammerhead corner is a bit rope-y.
