Before you start to play check that your guitar is in tune. Watch our other films on how to tune your guitar, if you are unsure.

A major scale consists of 8 notes, a root note all the way up to the octave. This scale starts with an A and ends with an A.

Starting with the fifth fret , second finger on the bottom string to find the root note of the A scale. You move up the octave starting with an A and finishing with an A. This is the number pattern of the frets to practise the scale.

5..7..4..5..7..4..6..7

It is good to practise the scale for dexterity and to build up your speed. And it's also a great exercise for your fingers. Try doing the scale backwards too.
