There are six strings on a guitar EAD GBE. All of the strings have to be tuned before playing to ensure a good sound. Never play your guitar if it is out of tune. You can use an electric tuner but it's also a good idea to know how to tune your guitar by ear.

Start with the fifth fret, and hold onto the E string, strum to sound out the note. To know if it is tune, strum the next string up, the A string to see if it sounds the same as the E string. If it sounds flat then use the tuning peg to tune it.

Next, tune the D string on the fifth fret. Use the A string to help tune it by ringing out the note and then ringing the note of the D to check if it is flat.

Next tune the G, using the D string to test the sound of the note.

Then, move on to the B string. This has a different interval. It needs to be tuned on the 4th fret. Use the G string to tune the open B.

Lastly, go back the fifth fret to retune the top E. Play the B note to help tune the E. Your guitar should now be tuned and ready to play.
