Community matters... especially when a family needs help. Neighbors still care, as a Los Angeles family found out when their world -- and their house -- was crumbling. VideoJug was there to capture this good deed on camera, explaining how neighbors can help each other.
Step 1: Home Makeover: Neighborhood Edition
In 2008, community volunteers, along with the help of the Westchester Rotary Club of Los Angeles, changed the life of Jackie Hunt and her entire family. Jackie Hunt was wheelchair bound and slowly losing her eyesight. With most of her children grown or in school, their home fell into disrepair. Volunteers gave hundreds of hours, local business donated materials, products and labor.
With the entire community helping, no job was too big. The outpouring of support from family, friends and complete strangers proved that charity, community and human kindness was alive and well within this small ocean-side town. In just four days, the Hunt's home was transformed.
Wesley Hunt, the youngest in the family, was overjoyed with his brand new bedroom and new wheelchair ramps for his mother. Valerie Hunt was overcome with emotion, calling it a "pleasure to be at home now." Jackie can enjoy her new home knowing that it was made possible with the love and care of her very own community.
The moral of this modern-day fairy tale is to never underestimate the power of those around you. There is power in helping. Is your community ready? More importantly...are you?
