How Religion Can Make You Happy
Whether you're a true believer or just want some inspiration, we turn to religion to find out why, on average, the devout are happier than the skeptics.
Step 1: Sweet Charity
Islam asks its observers to give alms, and Christianity urges tithing. While giving without getting may not seem like the path to happiness, research supports the idea that performing acts of kindness makes us feel good.
Step 2: Control Yourself
"We can reach a state of happiness via intoxicants, but such happiness is not authentic," says Rabbi Reuven Bulka. Many faiths warn against the highs and lows of drinking and drugs. Depending on your beliefs, it's moderation or abstinence that leads to contentment.
Step 3: Quiet Down
Most religions feature a contemplative or meditative aspect. Saint Teresa of Avila calls it the Prayer of Quiet. Carve out some time for silent reflection, whether it's prayer or yoga meditation.
Step 4: Join The Flock
One explanation of religious happiness is that observance usually comes with a healthy dose of community. Being a part of a regular group makes us feel good.
Step 5: Stop Shopping
Buddha warned of attachment to worldly goods, and Jesus said it was harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get to Heaven. Letting go of our need to accummulate material things can let in a calm serenity.
