The grinner knot is a simple effective knot that can be used when you have a bulky fly. This knot pulls away from the dressing so it doesn't get tangled there.
Grinner knot, it's a knot that I don't use much myself in fishing, although I suppose, it does have its uses and it's a great knot when you have, let's say, a fly that has a really bushy dressing and you need to tie the knot away from it. The grinner knot's real useful for that because we tie the knot away from the fly and then slide it into position. Basically, similar to the other knots that we've looked at but, we want to create it larger, so come through with quite a bit of spare line and what we need to do now is create a little loop around the main line and create the knot away from the fly.
So, pinch it there. There, you can see my loop and I'm going to come through the whole lot three or four times. Once I've come through on the last turn, you'll see that when I slide that tight, it moves away from the fly and there's the knot.
The knot's actually quite far from the fly but if you've got a bushy dressing and when we slide that in, just seats in nicely and doesn't affect the dressing or the fly. Quite a simple knot. Not as quick and easy as the clinch knot but the grinner's a useful knot and just as strong.
So, if you want to give something else a try on tying your flies on, try the grinner knot. It's very useful for bulky dressings and it can also be used in sea fishing and course fishing situations. .
