How To Ace An Audition For A Reality Performance Show
How To Ace An Audition For A Reality Performance Show: You think you've got what it takes to perform on TV? Here are some tips on how to stand out from the crowd at a performance show audition. So ace your audition for a reality performance show!
-
Step 1:
-
Pick the Perfect Piece
-
A good audition begins with the right performance piece. There are a couple of things to consider when picking your act: first,
it should be something you can nail without a problem. Don't be overly ambitious and stretch beyond your range. Second, pay attention to the show you're trying out for. Your song or piece should be in the same vein as what is featured on the show. Don't break-dance if it's a ballroom dancing series- but do push yourself beyond the favorites that everyone will be performing. Judges and casting agents like to see something that stands out, within reason.
-
Step 2:
-
Practice Makes... Practice
-
No great performance is effortless. Good performers get good because they practice what works, and get rid of what doesn't. Once you've got the hang of your act, ask a friend to watch you and give you some honest pointers. And yes, that means listening to what they have to say.
-
Step 3:
-
Look the Part
-
Style is a huge part of any star's allure. A signature style can help you look-- and, more importantly, feel-- like you belong on stage. Don't force it, though. Any outfit you choose should make you feel like a superstar, not someone who mistakenly bought her wardrobe at Baby Gap. And don't go too crazy. True, wild outfits sometimes get airtime, but as your mother used to say, is that really the kind of attention you want?
-
Step 4:
-
Ready, Set… Wait
-
Reality performance show auditions are called "cattle calls", meaning they're open to everyone and their mother. This results in crowds of hundreds, if not thousands. You will wait for hours, so bring supplies: water, snacks, and reading material.
-
Step 5:
-
And… Action
-
Finally, you're up! Take a deep breath, smile, and shine. Make eye contact with your audience and really give yourself over to the performance. You may be cut off after 30 seconds, so start out strong.
-
Step 6:
-
Exit Stage Right
-
Here's where different shows part ways. Some shows will send everyone home with a "don't call us, we'll call you." Others will send performers they like onto the next round that day. Either way, and especially if you don't know if you've been picked, give all staffers a heartfelt thanks and exit gracefully.
-
Step 7:
-
Repeat As Necessary
-
If you're one of the few who are called back, congratulations! Let each round of cuts- and there will be many- add to your confidence and enthusiasm. If you don't make the cut, cheer up. You may have even saved your own life! You've just averted an astronomical rise to stardom...followed by a crushing fall replete with haggard tabloid photos and 12-step programs. Now go out there and get a real job. You'll thank us later.
